On July
14, 1935 the Goshen Church
of the Nazarene was officially organized with 22 charter members. It was
located in a small building at 623 North 3rd Street
in Goshen, where it would
remain until after the building was sold in 2001. Although they did some
remodeling of that original building, the church membership voted on August
18, 1954, to construct a new church as soon as possible on
that same site. On March 18, 1956,
they moved into the new structure while they were still building the
other end of the church.
The Nappanee
Church of the Nazarene was
started in 1938, in a store front in uptown Nappanee. After relocating to
South Madison Street,
it again moved, this time to West Walnut Street
where it remained and celebrated its 50th anniversary. In approximately
1994, the congregation sold that church building and began worshiping in
several temporary locations waiting for God's guidance for their future.
In the winter of that same year, the church bought property on the corner
of SR 6 and CR 9 in Nappanee.
In the summer of 2000, the Goshen
Church purchased 9.5 acres
along State Road 15
in New Paris, IN. Dr. F.T. Bailey, District Superintendent suggested that
Goshen and Nappanee merge and
become the strong base for the New
Paris Church.
Both congregations met for prayer and worship and voted unanimously to
become the New Paris Church
of the Nazarene in August 2000. Our Ground Breaking Service for the
New Paris
Church was March
18, 2001, and the first service in the completed new building
was March 17, 2002.
